A New Group of
Ten candidates from communities in Tennessee and Alabama received certification as League Cycling Instructors (LCI) following successful completion of the League of American Bicyclist Certified Cycling Instructor Seminar 9/31-10/1/2017.
The seminar was hosted by the Jeff Roth Cycling Foundation at Henry Horton State Park, Chapel Hill TN as part of its state-wide mission to promote cycling as a safe and healthy form of recreation and transportation.
The goal of the JRCF-LCI outreach program is to identify and assist instructors certified to teach the League of American Bicyclists "Smart Cycling" curriculum in communities throughout Tennessee. The "Smart Cycling" curriculum is designed for people of all ages and abilities to help them feel more comfortable and secure about riding bicycles. LCIs help students develop a mindset that bicycles are vehicles, and as riders they have rights and responsibilities to legally and safely share the roadways with motorists and pedestrians.
Each of the 9 Tennesseans received scholarships from the JRCF to defray their registration expenses. As a condition for receiving the scholarship each candidate provided an example of how participation in the program would improve cycling in their community. Their responses highlighted goals and expectations like increasing the number of women cycling, expansion of a community bike education program, improving safety of the club/community cycling environment by promoting knowledge of how to better negotiate traffic intensity and congestion with motorists, and improved interaction with community planning organizations to accommodate cyclists and pedestrians in transportation infrastructure development.
All participants acknowledged appreciation of support for the weekend from the JRCF, the Henry Horton State Park staff, and the Chapel Hill Police Department for their role in helping make community residents aware of increased bicycle traffic on the roads with electronic signage at the city limits during the weekend seminar.
Neil Walker (LCI 2935), Madison GA, provided instruction for the seminar courtesy of the League of American Bicyclists. He was assisted by Jay Snyder (LCI 4771) from Knoxville TN. Donna Dixon (LCI 4770) and Chuck Faulkner (LCI 4769) coordinated the weekend event for the Jeff Roth Cycling Foundation. Dream Bikes , Knoxville, loaned a bike for the LCI Coach, Neil Walker to use. Mr. Walker traveled to the seminar from Philadelphia, PA.
